Is There A Vacation Crisis In America?
A wise person once said, “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”
Travel and tourism are important for so many reasons, yet the number of people taking vacation days has been dwindling over the years. A study, “All Work and No Pay: The Impact of Forfeited Time Off”, by Travel Effect, commissioned by the U.S. Travel Association, found that in 2013 Americans earned an average of 21 paid time off (PTO) days. Of those 21 days earned, they only took an average of 16 vacation days compared to an average of 20 days in 2000. That totals 169 million days and $52.4 billion dollars in benefits permanently lost.
Think about your next vacation. What thoughts and feelings come to mind as you envision yourself exploring, relaxing or doing whatever it is you like to do on vacation?
For me, from the very first moment I start planning a trip, whether it be a romantic weekend getaway for two or a week-long vacation with my entire family, the endorphins in my brain start going haywire. There is this little feeling of excitement that dances around in my stomach. It’s faint at first, but intensifies with every new detail of the trip that is planned out.
I find myself smiling more often, daydreaming about upcoming adventures, scouring the web in my spare time for travel information and feeling motivated to exercise so I look good in my swimsuit or new outfit. I even get along better with my spouse. Before I know it, my level of anticipation is so high, it feels like Gene Kelly, Donald O’ Connor and Debbie Reynolds are all three tap dancing in my stomach as if it were the set of Singing in the Rain (1952).
On the day I leave for vacation, I am almost giddy, beaming from ear to ear with excitement. Thoughts of conference calls, hectic schedules, answering emails, meeting deadlines and the everyday grind are all forgotten.
Throughout the trip I eat delicious food, enjoy new experiences, spend time with loved ones, learn about the history and culture of an area, discover things I never knew about myself, meet new people, take in the scenery, relax and gain knowledge. Every new adventure encountered throughout the vacation collectively makes up a memory that is forever imprinted in my brain.
For weeks after I return, I still have this lingering feeling of excitement. I look back at the photos and laugh at the times we had - recounting each detail.
Science has proven time and time again that beyond the lifelong memories you make while traveling, vacations give us so many other benefits that no other experiences in life can. A few of these benefits include physical and mental health, stronger relationships, better work ethic and even economic advantages.
Today, more than ever, Americans are concerned about living longer, healthier lives. What if the solution to this highly disputed topic were simple? Just travel more. And indeed, that might just be the answer, according to a report by the U.S. Travel Association. Their data found that taking a vacation once a year can decrease the risk of heart attack by 50%. In addition, other studies have shown that taking vacations significantly reduces stress, depression and high blood pressure.
Beyond the health benefits, taking a vacation can also help strengthen relationships for families and couples. A survey by U.S. Travel Association says overall, couples that travel together are “significantly more satisfied in their relationships, communicate well with their partners, enjoy more romance, have a better sex life, spend quality time together and share common goals and desires.” The memories you create on vacation form a unique bond between you and your travel companion because of the special experiences you share.
Taking a vacation to recharge is one of the most important things you can do to keep from experiencing burnout at work. A study by Oxford Economics found that vacations resulted in a higher level of productivity, better work performance, a better overall attitude to work and more dedicated employees.
Without travel and tourism, America’s economy would be virtually nonexistent. A study by Travel Effect, commissioned by the U.S. Travel Association, “U.S. Travel Answer Sheet”, reported that in 2013 $2.1 trillion in productivity was generated by domestic and international visitors. That money supported some 14.9 million jobs and $133.9 billion in tax revenue. Without that revenue each U.S. household would be required to pay $1,093 more in taxes.
It’s time for us to realize just how important taking a vacation AT LEAST once a year is. If you wait for everything to fall perfectly into place before scheduling your next vacation, then you’re never going to do it. So break out that calendar, pick a date and start enjoying life. Everything else can be worked out around your vacation. You deserve this, so just do it!
