What To Do In Kennebunk, Maine
The Kennebunks, in The Main Beaches region, is made up of Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Arundel and Cape Porpoise, which are located along the coastline of southwest Maine. The area is well-known as being frequented by the Bush family who have a summer home on a beautiful piece of land called Walker’s Point in Kennebunkport. When vacationers are not busy trying to catch a glimpse of 41st President George H.W. Bush and wife, Barbara - who are very active in the community and often seen bopping about town - there is a long list of fun family-friendly activities to partake in. Here are our favorites.
1. Visit the beach
Known as having one of the most breathtaking stretches of coastline in Maine, spending time at the beaches in The Kennebunks is one of the most popular things to do. Boasting a variety of different landscapes, each of the beaches in the area offer an endless selection of recreational activities from sunbathing and hunting for shells on the shoreline to swimming, surfing and fishing.
2. Eat the lobster
Thanks to The Kennebunks’ ideal location right on the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the area is known for having some of the freshest and most delicious lobster in the world. It doesn’t matter whether you sit down for a gourmet feast at a 5 star restaurant or drop by a hut on the side of the road for a lobster roll, you are sure not to be disappointed!
3. See the whales
One of the most majestic activities taking place just miles off Maine’s coastline is the migration of the whales. During the summer months several species of whales can be easily spotted frolicking about in the waters. There are several companies in the area that offer whale watching tours to see these majestic creatures up close and personal.
4. Check out the lighthouses
Lighthouses have long been a symbol of Maine, with around 70 of these beauties dotting the stunning coastline of the state. Many of these lighthouses have been preserved and are open for public viewing. Don’t forget to bring your camera because you will not want to miss capturing the breathtaking picture that each Maine lighthouse paints with the Atlantic Ocean as the backdrop.
5. Snap a photo of Walker’s Point
Besides the fact that it is the summer home to the Bush Family, Walker’s Point is one of the most breathtaking pieces of land in the area. The retreat has been in the Bush family for over a century and has been visited by leaders from all over the world. Walker’s Point is not open to the public, but can be clearly seen from several vista points along Ocean Avenue or on one of the many area boating tours.
Find unique treasures when shopping around The Kennebunks. When vacationing in the area, visitors love to explore the numerous art galleries, antique stores, trendy boutiques, book stores, gift shops and local markets. Dock Square is one of the best places to explore unique shops and grab lunch in a local café.
7. Kayaking , biking and paddleboarding
What better way to experience the beauty of The Kennebunks than by kayaking, biking or paddleboarding through the area? At Coastal Maine Kayak & Bike, those eager to experience the great outdoors can rent kayaks or canoes, several types of bikes or stand up paddleboards for several hours or a full day for tons of fun in the sun! They even offer guided kayak tours. Our favorite is the Cape Porpoise Tour, which includes visiting the inside of Goat Island Lighthouse, having a picnic outside and paddling around the islands.
8. Seashore Trolley Museum
Take a relaxing ride on a restored authentic streetcar through the beautiful Maine countryside, explore a collection of over 250 transit vehicles, shop at the museum store and hike on trails around the museum.
9. Kennebunk Farmers Market
Support the community when you shop at the Kennebunk Farmers Market from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. They offer a variety of different items including fresh fruits and veggies, poultry and other meats, spices, jams and jellies, baked goods, flowers and plants, arts and crafts, body care products and much more.
10. Kennebunk Art Walk
Discover the artsy side of The Kennebunks! Held the third Friday of every month from June through September, local art galleries, art studios and museums are open for a self-guided tour from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Find unique pieces from local artisans and take a piece of your vacation home!

Ode to La Piazza Ristorante Italiano
Check out one of Branson’s newest restaurants, La Piazza Ristorante Italiano, which is conveniently located on Green Mountain Drive adjacent to the Capital Resorts Group Preview Center. Although only recently opening, the fine dining restaurant has already received a lot of positive attention from locals and vacationers to the Ozarks that love their delicious menu items, wonderful ambiance and friendly service.
Opening daily at 3:00 p.m. for dinner, La Piazza offers guests a wide variety of gourmet menu items like appetizers, salad, chicken, seafood, steak and of course, pasta. Everything on the menu is exquisite, perfectly prepared with a beautiful presentation. One of their most popular dishes is the Pollo Ripieno - stuffed chicken breasts with goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes and black olives served with a presto cream sauce, polenta cake and spinach. As far as entrees, our personal favorite is the Bisteccalla Florentina - a grilled rib-eye steak topped with a red wine demi-glaze served with seasonal vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes. Mama Mia – it’s delicious! They also feature delectable specials which change daily.
If you like wine, well then you’ve come to the right place! La Piazza has a large selection of red, white and rose wines to choose from, many of which are Italian. They also have a wide variety of specialty drinks including margaritas, mojitos, 11 different martinis and much more.
One of the best things about La Piazza is the elegant, yet cozy atmosphere which is perfect for everyone from couples to large groups on vacation. Diners enjoy modern furniture and décor, a beautiful curved granite bar and large mirrors reflecting the perfectly lit surrounding. The atmosphere is only further enhanced by the fast and friendly service provided by the staff.

Father's Day Celebrated
Our Distinct Differences Program continues to surprise owners and guests throughout the holidays, and most recently this Father’s Day. To show our appreciation to all of those dads staying with us, we handed out special gifts at several of our Capital Resorts Group locations. Each dad received four delicious, colorfully frosted chocolate and vanilla cupcakes in a festive box topped with a bow along with heartfelt card.
After hearing a sermon on Mother’s Day in church, Sonora Dodd wondered why fathers didn’t receive equal recognition. You see, her father raised six children on his own after their mother died during childbirth, giving her an especially close paternal bond with him. Soon after, Sonora came up with the idea for Father’s Day and began spreading the word. Just one year later, in 1910, the first Father’s Day occurred in Spokane, Washington. Celebrations continued over the years, but it wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson made the first presidential proclamation for Father’s Day and designated it as the third Sunday in June. Then, in 1972 Father’s Day was finally established as a permanent national holiday by President Richard Nixon.
Today Father’s Day is a highly celebrated holiday in many countries all around the world. It is a day to show that special father figure in your life just how much he means to you.
