Feature Story: Edenton, North Carolina
We've set our sights on Edenton for our next resort in the Capital Collection and here's why!
If you follow the Intracoastal Waterway of the Atlantic just a few miles inland from the Albemarle Sound on North Carolina’s southern coast you will find Edenton, one of the state’s oldest towns. Nearly 300 years old, Edenton contains a trove of architectural treasures, constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries. Thanks to the Edenton Historical Commission, formed in the 1960’s, many of these historical buildings have been restored and are open for daily tours through the visitor’s center. One of the many buildings included in the tour is the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse; the oldest courthouse in American and a National Historic Landmark.
As the largest freshwater sound in North America, The Albemarle Sound serves as the “catch basin” of four major rivers in the area, including the Roanoke and Chowan, and many smaller rivers and creeks that spider into it from the heart of North Carolina and some stretching all the way from Virginia. Visitors are largely drawn to the over 500 miles of shoreline of the sound because of the flourishing vegetation and numerous species of wildlife native to the region creating a breathtaking backdrop. Acting as a gateway to the Outer Banks, The Albemarle Sound is one of seven other coastal estuaries in the area, making it an ideal place for water activities like canoeing, kayaking, sailing and paddleboarding. For centuries, the fishing industry has thrived in the sound and today it is still one of the most favored fishing holes, attracting fisherman from all over to participate in annual bass and rockfish tournaments.
A must-visit while in Edenton is the Colonial teapot, a historical monument of the Edenton Tea Party. In 1774, 51 women banded together to boycott British tea and other goods in protest to the Intolerable Acts. This was the first recorded action of an organized group of women in the early colonies and resulted in the repeal of the tax laws.
While the architecture, history and water activities all draw many visitors to the banks of Edenton, the town's true appeal comes from something that not many towns in the Unites States still have left – and that is age-old unscathed beauty. With its rich history and small town charm, it is not surprising that Edenton has been named one of “America’s Prettiest Towns” by Forbes.com and is a great spot for your next family vacation no matter what time of year you choose to visit. Keep watching in upcoming newsletters for information about the grand opening of Waterside Resort in Edenton.
Golfing in the Ozarks
When you think about some of the top golf destinations in the U.S., usually places like Myrtle Beach, Maui and Pebble Beach come to mind. As the area has grown, Branson has quickly become a favorite haven for golfers of all types!
As one of the most popular vacation spots for families in America, Branson has long been known for its live entertainment shows, exciting attractions, outlet shopping and outdoor activities. Now you can add world-class golfing to the list! Many of these courses are closely connected with some of the biggest names in golf and vary in skill level to accommodate players from beginner to pro.
After 7 years in the making, founder of Bass Pro Shops® Johnny Morris, along with Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and designer Jack Nicklaus, completed Top of the Rock Golf Course in April 2014 and raising the bar even higher for golfing in the area. The world-renowned course offers a particularly challenging feat, nestled along the edge of a cliff in the Ozark Mountains – just one of its many unique features. Along with its breathtaking panoramic views of Table Rock Lake, beautiful landscaping, streams, waterfalls and bass filled ponds, the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course also has a 70,000 square foot putting course designed by Tom Watson and an Arnold Palmer practice facility.
Along with Buffalo Ridge Springs Golf Course, Top of the Rock hosted the PGA Champions Legends of Golf Tournament for the first time in 2014, making Top of the Rock the first Par-3 course to ever be included in a professional championship. This year, from April 19th through the 26th the course will be the site of the Second Annual Legends of Golf Tournament.
Buffalo Ridge Springs Golf Course, a Tom Fazio designed course, formerly known as Branson Creek Golf Club, also recently underwent a complete transformation at the hands of Johnny Morris. You’ll experience the majestic beautify of the Ozark Mountains firsthand while golfing on this course.
Created in honor of golf legend Payne Stewart, the Payne Steward Golf Club is situated in beautiful Branson Hills and has been ranked as the #1 Course in Missouri for three years in a row by GolfWeek.
